WHICH GOODS CONTAIN DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES?
All solid, liquid or gaseous substances that may pose a risk to health, safety and the environment during transport and are listed as dangerous substances in the IMDG Code or classified under these rules.
The transportation of hazardous substances, which poses a potential risk of sea pollution, is governed by two key international conventions: the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). These conventions encompass the pertinent sections of the International Transport of Dangerous Chemicals Code (IMDG), which provides the comprehensive regulations for the maritime transport of such substances.
As of 1 January 2004, the IMDG code became mandatory.
The classification and risk definitions of dangerous goods for all types of transport (sea, air, rail, land and inland waterways) are also carried out by the United Nations (UN) Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.
DANGEROUS GOODS HANDLING REQUIREMENTS
Unless explicitly stated in the Rules, any cargo that does not adhere to the Rules' specifications regarding its definition, classification, packaging, labelling, marking, and mandatory documentation will be deemed unsuitable for sea transportation.
The individuals responsible for shipping dangerous goods on behalf of the carrier or shipper must possess the requisite knowledge as outlined in the rules.
During the transportation process, it is strictly prohibited to utilize uncertified packages and packaging materials that have not been manufactured, reconstructed, or repaired in accordance with the Code's stipulations.
